The pattern that we find on the page for steel descriptions is that the first number prefixing the "MoV" steel indicates how much of the carbon content makes up the steel. Therefore the "5" in 5Cr15MoV tells us that carbon makes up -- not 5% of the steel's overall mass composition -- but 0.5%. Likewise, 8Cr13MoV has 0.8% of its mass composition as carbon. The second number is a clear indication of how much chromium (or Cr) makes up the steel. Therefore, in 5Cr15MoV, 15% of the steel's overall mass composition is chromium. Finally the "MoV" denotes the presence of two elements: Molybdenum (Mo) and Vanadium (V): hence the MoV. The amount of each element present changes for the different MoV steels. These steels have often been called 'mystery steels' because they are relatively new and not well understood. The more referenced 8Cr13MoV steel is often said to be analogous to AUS-8 because both have similar chemical compositions and steel properties.
